The journey was long and fraught with danger, mortal and immortal alike.

Similarly, it was filled with friends... mortal, and immortal alike.

Perhaps he wasn't the likeliest companion to find on this journey. Perhaps he wasn't the most good, or wholesome, or honest, but he was the one you fell for.

Slipping into everyday life after the highs of an adventure like that can bring distance, and it has. He's away for the moment, but very soon, he'll be coming home. Home to you, and by any god that's listening, you'll make sure it's worth the wait.
